Critical infrastructure is weaponized. When disaster strikes, will it be a catastrophe for you?

EMP from nuclear detonation

Electromagnetic pulse (EMP) is electrical current in the air. It results from detonation of nuclear weapons. The metal cables used to distribute electricity acts as an antenna and collect the current from the air. Electrical transformers attached to the cables, built to manage alternating current, can become overheated and fail due to the added direct current.

CME –> GMC from solar flares

Solar activity is on an 11-year cycle. 2024 – 2025 are projected to be years of peak activity. Solar flares from sun spots eject billions of tons of the sun’s material into space. When this coronal mass ejection (CME) hits the earth, the earth’s magnetic field deforms. The movement of a magnetic field produces electrical current – geomagnetically induced current (GIC) that, when collected by electrical distribution cables can overheat and destroy electrical transformers.

Physical attack

Utilities report a significant upswing in deliberate violence against components of the electrical generation and transmission system. Employees in the electrical power industry acknowledge more than 20 attacks in a three month period November 2022 – January 2023. Among the largest transformers, replacement lead time is measured in years and the rail infrastructure that originally delivered them has been decommissioned. Highway infrastructure cannot bear the weight of the largest transformers.
